Communications and Policy Officer British Embassy Vientiane
The British Embassy Vientiane is looking for a suitably qualified Communications and Policy Officer. The role of the Communications and Policy Officer is to manage the Embassy’s external communications activities and provide top-class political and communications advice to the Ambassador, Deputy Head of Mission (DHM) and Foreign Office in London. This is an exciting job at the frontline of the Embassy’s work, and would suit an experienced communications specialist with a strong interest in public affairs.
Job Description: The jobholder will lead on the Embassy’s public diplomacy and communications activities and events to promote and support British interests in Laos. He/she will manage and edit the Embassy’s website and facebook page in English, and lead on Embassy events and promotional activities. The job will also involve drafting press releases, articles and speeches, and working with a second Policy/Communications Officer on Lao language communications activities. The jobholder will be required to set up media interviews and press conferences for the Ambassador and other British visitors to Laos, and provide briefing to the person being interviewed. He/ she will advise the Ambassador and DHM on communications and media opportunities, including newspaper and TV/ radio interviews.
The jobholder will also be required to work with the Policy and Projects Officer and DHM to provide regular reporting on domestic and regional political and economic issues affecting Laos for the Ambassador and Foreign Office in London. This job is high-profile, at the heart of the Embassy’s political and communications activities. The jobholder will be given responsibility and license to be innovative, but will also work as part of the Embassy team in a friendly and supportive environment. Necessary Skills / Experience:
• Fluent written and spoken English. Fluency in Lao an advantage;
• University degree in a relevant subject;
• At least 5 years experience working in a communications/business/political role in an office or Embassy, some of which must have been gained in an international or English- speaking environment;
• Computer literacy, including ability to use facebook and other social media;
• A good general understanding of the political and economic landscape in Laos;
• Excellent written and spoken communication and team working skills;
• Proven ability to deliver results consistently and to a high standard.
Desirable skills / Experience:
• Previous experience and existing contacts with the media in Laos/ the region;
Terms & Conditions and Benefits:
The grade of the job will be FCO Locally Engaged (LE) II.
The successful applicant must be available to start work in August 2013.
The successful applicant will be offered a one-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of upgrading to a permanent contract subject to performance. There will be a probationary period of 2 months, during which employment may be terminated if the jobholder is not performing adequately.
The British Government is an equal opportunities employer and this position is open to both Lao and foreign nationals. The success candidate will work full-time, 40 hours per week. Normal working will be 0830-1630 Monday-Friday. Employees will be entitled to 20 days of leave per year, as well as up to a combined annual total of 14 Lao National and British public holidays. They will also benefit from a private medical package. Travel to the UK or to British Embassies in the region may be required and occasional work during evenings and weekends which will be compensated with time off in lieu.
Employment of the successful applicant will be conditional on satisfactory submission of a local criminal records check, passing an Embassy security assessment and satisfactory completion of the probation period.
Full training will be provided for the successful applicant by the Embassy.
