The Agro Bio Diversity Initiative (TABI) is a joint project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and the Swiss Development Corporation (SDC). The projects’ goal is to contribute to poverty alleviation and improved livelihoods of upland communities through sustainable management and use of Agro Bio Diversity (ABD) in multi-functional landscapes. TABI Phase 2 covers the period 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2016, and is managed by the central Coordination Unit/Support Office (CU/SO) in Vientiane and Provincial Coordination and Support offices (PCOs) in the PAFOs of Luang Prabang and Xieng Khouang,
The focus of project activities includes:
– Forest and land use planning aimed at stabilizing and developing forest and agricultural land use;
– Supporting ABD-linked livelihoods activities to enhance the role of ABD in livelihoods and development;
– Supporting and facilitating a policy environment supportive of indigenous ABD in development processes.
ABD-linked Livelihoods – Technical Advisor and Trainer (ALTAT)
TABI Phase 2 will support sub Projects (SPAs) related to NTFPs and agro-forestry, crops and cropping systems, aquatic resource management and utilization and other ABD-linked livelihoods options. An experienced and capable field Technical Advisor and Trainer is required to assist the wide range of SPA implementers, to ensure the technical quality of SPAs, to ensure they are effectively planned, implemented, monitored and reported.
Tasks and Responsibilities
The tasks of the ALTAT will include:
i. Provide technical advice and hands-on training and mentoring to upgrade technical skills and capacity;
ii. Provide and/or facilitate the provision of the necessary training and capacity development activities;
iii. Assist to develop subproject proposals, including feasibility studies, baseline studies etc;
iv. Provide both technical and managerial support in post harvest processing and marketing, and in establishing and operation of producer groups, associations or individual business;
v. Develop extension materials, including gross margin budgets and technical protocols etc;
vi. Be the focal point for knowledge and data on key ABD species or species group; and
vii. Promote the inclusivity of gender, ethnic and poverty issues in TABI program activities.
Required skills and experience
The successful applicant will be a Lao national, and have the following profile:
– Bachelor degree or higher in field of agriculture, forestry, biology or related fields;
– At least 10 years successful experience in agriculture and forestry projects, preferably in bilateral,
IDA or NGO projects, and preferably from both the technical and managerial perspectives;
– Demonstrated experience and interest in AgroBioDiversity;
– Good interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrated ability to work in villagers and fields; and
– Good computer skills, and reasonable proficiency in English.
Duty Station: The ALTAT will share time between Luang Prabang and Xieng Khouang Provinces, and Vientiane.
Duration: 18 months, with 3 months probation period, expected to start October 2012 (50%, part time also possible)
